FAQ - Assisted Living Center Questions

Q. Does the facility provide a wheelchair, walker, or commode? If so, how much does it cost?
A. Residents in Assisted Living can receive a walker through Medicare with a Physician's order. They may also receive a wheelchair with a Physician's order and if Medicare guidelines are met. Should the resident ever need to move to health care, they can take the walker and wheelchair with them in their move. We do not charge for the use of commodes.

Q. How often is a resident bathed and is it at a set time?
A. This is part of the negotiated service agreement so it will depend on the number of times established through this.

Q. If the resident's doctor is not from Hutchinson, who will complete the admitting orders and how soon do they need to see their Hutchinson doctor?
A. The resident should try to see their Hutchinson physician before admission or on the day of admission. Exceptions can be made if authorized by the designated Hutchinson physician.

Q. Can we furnish supplies?
A. The family may provide supplies as mutually agreed upon through the Negotiated Service Agreement with Wesley Towers', but there would have to be arrangements made so we are never without any necessary items. HCBS residents are not required to purchase supplies, except for extra personal items.

Q. Who sets up the medications?
A. Again, this is a part of the negotiated service agreement. This is determined after we have completed our needs assessment on the resident.

Q. Can the resident do laundry? Do we still need to mark clothing?
A. Yes, the resident can do laundry. We still request that items be marked because the clothing might accidentally get put in with other clothing. Wesley Towers has a heat activated marking system and housekeeping can mark the residents clothing when moving into their suite.

Q. If a resident's health condition changes, who is notified and who decides if they are sent to the doctor?
A. The person listed on the face sheet to be notified will be contacted with a change of condition. The nurse makes a judgment call as to when the doctor is notified, and then we follow the physician's instructions.

Q. What furniture can the resident bring?
A. Residents bring all their own furniture; Wesley Towers provides a small microwave and small refrigerator. The resident can bring their own microwave, if they wish.

Q. May I take my loved one out overnight? If I can, whom do I tell?
A. It is wonderful if a resident is able to go home with their family for short periods of time; this will depend on the health of the resident. We ask that you let the charge nurse know ahead of time so that medications can be prepared and we can notify the dietary department that you will be gone. The person taking the resident out will have to sign for responsibility of the resident while they are out of the facility.

Q. Should a resident bring any valuables?
A. We request that you consider whether the resident brings valuables into the facility. We do not normally have a theft problem, but we also like to reduce the number of temptations.

Q. Who hangs the pictures? How many can I bring?
A. Our housekeeping staff will be glad to hang pictures for you. You may have as many as you would like, as long as it is safe.

Q. Describe your meal times.
A. Residents in the Assisted Living Center will have a flexible meal schedule. Breakfast is from 7:30am-9:00am. They can choose either a hot breakfast or a continental breakfast. Lunch is from 11:30am-1:00pm and supper is from 5:00pm-6:30pm.

Q. Can my loved one receive physical, occupational and/or speech therapy? Can and how is this billed.
A. We have licensed therapy services available. This is billed through Medicare and your supplemental insurance on an outpatient basis (Part-B). Our own restorative staff will implement plans established by the therapists.

Q. May the resident have a cocktail before dinner?
A. Yes, if they have a physician's order for one. Alcohol may be kept in the resident's suite if care planned, or kept in the medication room and served as ordered by the physician.

Q. Who re-orders the medications?
A. A nurse from the assisted living center if we are managing the medications. The resident is responsible if they manage their own medications.

Q. Does Wesley Towers provide medical transportation and if so, what are the charges?
A. Wesley Towers does provide transportation to all medical appointments within a certain radius of Hutchinson at no cost. We do charge a fee if someone has to sit with the resident at the doctor's office; this charge is $18.00 an hour.

Q. What activities can the resident participate in?
A. Residents can attend any activities offered through the activities' department. The facility staff will provide transportation to previously arranged events that are quite a walking distance. It is the residents' right to not take part in activities if that is their choice.

Q. Can they eat in their suite? Is it an extra charge?
A. Residents are allowed to eat meals in their suite when they are not feeling well, and this is with no extra charge. However, if they just choose to eat in their suite and there is no medical necessity for this, there is an extra charge of $2.00.

Q. If I want to eat a meal with my loved one, how do I go about doing this and where do we eat?
A. You are welcome to eat with your loved one, and we'll be happy to assist you with these plans! Our social services department can help you with reservations, or you can visit with the communication center in the Towers building. You may eat in the regular dining suite, or we have a private dining suite adjacent to the residents dining suite in the assisted living center.

Q. Can we hang a bird feeder outside the suite?
A. Yes, but only on a shepherd's hook. The resident/their family will be responsible for providing the birdseed.

Q. What alterations or additions can be made in the suites?
A. Due to our license, we ask that no physical alterations or additions be made to the resident suites. Wesley Towers will make the selections for carpet, paint, and window treatments. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding of this matter.

Q. Is storage available?
A. Not in the assisted living center.

Q. Are there garages available?
A. There are no garages available specifically for the assisted living center. However, if we have garages available in the Towers or Wesley Manor, the Marketing Director will work with you to accommodate a garage for your vehicle.

Q. What items would be extra?
A. Telephone, cable television, medications, personal items, paper products and the services agreed upon in the negotiated service agreement.
